Vestry & Office Bearers

Responsibilities

During any one year the Select Vestry meets on approximately twelve occasions. Sub-committees meet as and when required. While the duties of the vestry are primarily concerned with the Fabric, Finance and Furnishings, a considerable amount of time is also spent discussing many aspects of Parish Life such as church attendance, staffing and development at vestry and sub-committee level. Careful minutes are kept of all business transacted at the meetings.

Membership

The members are appointed annually at the Easter General Vestry by the registered members of the parish who are present at that meeting. To be elected the parishioner must be at least eighteen years of age and a registered member of the parish. Select Vestry members (twelve in total) are proposed and seconded at the Easter General Vestry meeting; if more than twelve proposals are achieved then a ballot is held. Four additional members are also appointed annually. The Rector nominates a churchwarden and a glebe warden and the registered members appoint a Peoples’ churchwarden and a Peoples’ glebe warden. The Rector is normally the chairman of the vestry and any other ministers in the parish are ex-officio members of the vestry.

Note About Registration

To become a “registered” member of the parish, the parishioner must sign a declaration to the effect “I am a member of the Church of Ireland; resident at a stated address and not a registered member of any other church within the same parish”. Usually the registered member must have paid a nominal amount into Parish funds (currently in the Armagh Diocese this is £5.00 sterling per annum).
