When: Fridays 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Special Events: Parents’ Day at Gosford Forest Park and NI Annual Squirrel Day
Leaders: Chontelle McCartney and Carol Wick

Description of Activities

Squirrels are the first step for children joining the Scouting family. We are the pre-Beaver group and we can be identified with a navy sweatshirt and blue and burgundy scarf. We have a team of hard working and experienced leaders enabling a varied and exciting programme with lots of fun activities to be provided. We enjoy story-telling, action songs, team games, crafts and parties and like the older sections within Scouting we ensure that the children experience the outdoors environment. Popular visits made by the squirrels have included the Fire Station, Tannaghmore Gardens, McDonalds, Belfast Zoo and Christmas at Crawfordsburn. They also develop their imaginations through themed evenings such as Circus night, Pirate night and Space night. Squirrels are encouraged to share with others and joining is a great way to make new friends.

As well as our children benefiting from the Squirrels programme we have contributed to a number of charities such as Childline, NI Children’s Hospice and more recently we raised £1000 for Craigavon Hospital’s Neo-natal unit.

Beavers also go out and about to visit the movies, the Police Station, planting bulbs to help the environment and Belfast Zoo. Description of Activities

The aim of our Scout Troop is to promote the development of young people so that they may achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential. Scouts are taught to be responsible citizens and to be responsible members of their local and international communities. We encourage the scouts to take part in a wide range of activities developing their skills in many areas. There is a large number of challenging awards and activity badges including awards for participation in group projects. Outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, orienteering, pioneering, abseiling and learning survival skills are very popular. Scouts are taught the importance of keeping fit and they are encouraged to develop their creative talents and explore their own values and attitudes to life. Many camps incorporate an International dimension where we meet scouts from all over the world.

All of our leaders are registered and have been officially trained by the Scout Association. Scouting is about being with friends, as part of a team, participating fully in the adventure and opportunities of life.

4th Portadown Explorer Scouts

Target Group: Boys and Girls 14-18 years
When: Tuesdays 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Special Events: International and Local camps, Team expeditions
Leaders: Tim Neill and Paul Walker

Description of Activities

Explorer Scouts provide boys and girls with the opportunity to take part in adventurous and challenging activities. They are encouraged to take part in community schemes, international camps and environmental projects. They help out in the younger sections of the scouts and regularly take part in voluntary activities within their own community. Two members were selected to attend the World Jamboree in England; the largest Jamboree in the world with 40,000 scouts attending!

Explorer Scouts are a very modern organisation as they can easily accommodate the young people when they are busy studying for examinations or doing other things. A flexible programme facilitates activities at week-ends and during the holidays. The range of activities on offer is extending by linking up with other explorer scouts in Northern Ireland. Scouting is about being with friends, as part of a team, participating fully in the adventure and opportunities of life.
